Exotic Essence
Essential Oils

Essential Oils not only work by olfaction and their subsequent perception by our brain, but also through their action on our endocrine, nervous, and immune systems.

Aromatherapy Essential Oils are Pure Distilled, CO2 extracted, or Expressed Aromatic Oils and work in human beings by either stimulating or depressing biochemical or physiological functions, or through their ability to suppress or destroy pathogens.
Exotic Essence:  Essential oils are volatile aromatic substances which naturally occur within certain plants, giving them their distinctive odor. Doctor Phyto is proud to offer only those essences which are produced, either by distillation, or by expression from naturally aromatic plant material. Real essential oils, not synthetics or fragrance oils, are more than collections of complex phytochemicals. Having been produced by plants, they have a direct link with the Earth. This living energy is contained within essential oils. Since we too are of the Earth and also rely upon this link for our health, we can merge the essence’s energy with our own to create changes within our spiritual, mental and physical being. Transport and Effect: For the purposes of Holistic (Clinical) Aromatherapy, essential oils are primarily introduced into the body through dermal (skin) and olfactory absorption, and in limited application, certain oils can be administered orally. When applied to the skin, either through a bath with essential oils dispersed in the water, or through massage with the oils dissolved into a carrier oil (vegetable oil), the tiny molecules readily penetrate the skin by migrating into hair follicles and pores and into their accompanying blood supplies via their capillary systems. Once in the blood stream, they are transported to all parts of the body. When inhaled, the tiny molecules are carried directly to the roof of the nasal cavity, where the receptor cells of the olfactory bulb are located. Here, the molecules can enter the blood system through capillaries, and additionally, their effect on olfactory receptor cells, cause electro-chemical messages about the aroma to be transmitted directly to the brain, which can then release neurochemicals which may be sedative, stimulating, relaxing, hypnotic, or euphoric in effect. They can also trigger emotions and memory through the limbic system of the brain. Molecules which are not absorbed in the olfactory region, are carried into the lungs, where they are absorbed through the alveoli.

Application Aromatherapy is often more effective when combined with other therapies such as massage, hydrotherapy, visualization, meditation, and even dietary reform and exercise. Inhalation of essential oils can ease tension, depression, blocked sinuses, cough, sore throat, and disorders of the respiratory tract, and aid mental and spiritual focusing. Application can be accomplished by applying a few drops to a handkerchief from which you inhale. Alternately, a few drops can be added to a bowl of hot water from which you breathe the vapors coming off. Put a towel over your head to keep the vapors concentrated. Hand and Foot Baths are a pleasant and relaxing way to apply Aromatherapy combined with Reflexology, a form of massage. Actually, the feet are so covered with pressure points, that you don’t have to even be trained in Reflexology, just massage the feet, you cannot miss. Besides easing your tired feet, you can treat arthritis, rheumatism, fungal infections, and through the pressure points, the whole body becomes accessible. Bathing in essential oils coat the entire body as well as permeate the moisture laden air, creating a complete therapeutic environment (see Immersion Therapy). Depending upon the oil, 5 to 15 drops can be added to the bath to treat such conditions as insomnia, nervous tension, muscular pains, poor circulation, PMS, colds & flu, headaches, and edema to name a few. Compresses are very effective in treating skin conditions, muscular sprains, bruises, as well as your internal organs, by applying essential oils to a localized area of the body. Add up to 10 drops to a cotton gauze or bandage soaked in hot water or vegetable ointment. A hot towel can be placed over the compress to keep it warm. Compresses should be applied over the area to be treated. If the kidneys, apply over the lower back; if the heart, apply to the chest, if the intestines, apply to the abdomen, and so on. Therapeutic Massage is a most effective method of applying Aromatherapy. Essential Oils are diluted with vegetable oils and then rubbed into the body through various massage techniques. Depending upon the essence, 9 to 18 drops are added to one ounce of vegetable oil, which can be avocado, hazelnut, wheat germ, calendula, grape seed, olive, sweet almond, or sunflower seed oils. Only small quantities should be made up at a time, as vegetable oils combined with the essences, tend to oxidize and turn rancid. Doctor Phyto provides a mix of the above oils without essences, in a one ounce dropper bottle, for your convenience. Just decide which essences and quantities you wish to blend, and add them by the drop to the one ounce vegetable oil dropper bottle. There is room on the bottle’s label to make note of which oils you added for future reference. Shake well, then apply a small amount of the oil mixture to your hands with the convenient dropper pipette, and massage into the skin with whatever technique you desire. You may wish to consult a massage or Aromatherapy book for ideas, however, your body (or your partner’s or patient’s body) generally knows what it needs or likes, and this can be ascertained if we listen carefully. Gargles made of aromatic waters are helpful in treating sore throats, mouth ulcers, Thrush, and gum disease. Mix 15 to 30 drops of essential oil with one ounce of white sherry to prepare a base which can be stored and used as required. To use, add 1 ml. of base (a dropper full), to a glass of water, stir, and gargle. Doctor Phyto provides empty one ounce dropper bottles for your convenience in making the gargle base. Sorry, we cannot provide the sherry. Orally, ingestion of essential oils is generally not recommended due to possible danger to the liver, however, under expert care, certain oils can be taken orally to aid the function of the digestive system, and help the body to fight colds and flu, infection, headaches and pain. Formulating It is important to select a blend of a few oils which not only treat the condition, but also complement the individual. This requires knowledge and the ability to listen carefully, or sense in some fashion, what your body or an individual’s is saying. This may be through introspection, touch, by assaying what an individual is describing, accepting each detail as relevant, or through analytical analysis There are many excellent texts on Aromatherapy, some of which you can find under our links section. You can find additional information in our "Label Pages" and Information Database. Additionally, we offer the following guidelines concerning volatility and temperaments of various oils: Generally, essential oils are divided into three classes of characteristics. Base Notes; oils of low volatility (evaporate slowly) tend to precipitate sedation, and should predominate any formulation intended for nervous, erratic or neurotic behaviors. Gums and woods ore the predominate contributors to this group. Middle Notes primarily affect the digestion, and bodily functions such as metabolism. The spices and herbs such as lavender and the mints are the predominate members here. At least one oil from this group should be included in any formula to provide a link between the high and low notes. Top Notes (highest volatility) should predominate formulas where there is lethargy, depression, or lack of interest. They are stimulating and uplifting, and include lemon, eucalyptus, and the sages. Seek to balance the oils according to the needs of the body, mind and soul, including at least one oil from each class.
The following Single Pure Essential Oils are available.
(Essential Oil formulations for specific health concerns will follow in the months ahead, along with new additions to this list of single oils.) Proceed to the Price / Order Form.
